What is Sacro Occiptial Technique

What is Sacro Occipital Technique (SOT)?

Sacro Occipital Technique is a specialized, comprehensive, gentle and innovative Chiropractic Technique, named because of the relationship between the sacrum (base of the spine) and the occiput (base of skull).

One of the functions of the sacrum is to pump Cerebro-Spinal Fluid (CSF) from the base of the spine back up the spinal canal to the brain and throughout the nervous system.  The occiput also helps to pump CSF. This is a wavelike oscillation in the covering of the brain and spinal cord and acts as its circulatory system.  It functions much like breathing, in that it has a cyclic tightening and loosening phase.  The normal function of this cranial sacral respiratory mechanism is recognized as a primary function of life in the body and must be normal if all functions of the body are to be normal.

The pelvis connects to the sacrum and forms the foundational support of the skeleton.  It supports the upper body right up to the skull, and enables us to transfer our weight to our legs.  The spine holds our body upright, supports all of our organs and provides anchor points for our muscles.  It also houses and protects our delicate nervous system.  The nervous system controls our body, and can only function normally when our structures are balanced and our pelvis is stable.  That is what SOT aims to achieve.

Visceral procedures, CMRT (Chiropractic Manipulative Reflex Technique), can be used to normalize organ function, including high blood pressure, digestive problems, urinary tract problems, and female reproductive system issues, to name a few.

Like other chiropractic techniques, SOT also corrects abnormal spinal mechanics and any associated nerve problems.  These can include back pain, headaches, dizziness, arm and leg pain or numbness, and TMJ problems.

The treatments are gentle and relaxing.  SOT works by specifically positioning the body to use the weight of the body to correct the imbalance.

SOT provides lasting results in a short time.  A patient just starting with SOT care will often notice such a great improvement in a short time that they will feel they are completely healed.  Also, with the precise diagnostic methods of SOT, problems in the body can be detected even though they are not yet causing pain.
