Weight Loss after Pregnancy in West Seattle
In my West Seattle Chiropractic Clinic, I see many new moms struggling to lose weight after the baby is born. It is particularly challenging due to the exhaustion following pregnancy and labor and the lack of sleep with a newborn. Also, nursing requires additional calories to feed a healthy baby.
Obviously, removing all junk food and sugar products from your diet is necessary, along with eating a healthy well balanced diet. Many processed foods have things that are bad not only for the mom, but also for the baby. One example is High Fructose Corn Syrup, which is processed with mercury, a neurotoxin. Beyond this, there are some very important issues to look at.
Improving digestion is the first step in long lasting weight loss. Your digestive system can either make you ENERGY or it can make you FAT. If you have less energy and weight gain, your digestive system is not working well. A few general things to consider:
*Digestive enzymes such as Amaylase, Bromelain, and Lipase are effective. Good quality and the right combination are important.
*Probiotics are the good bacteria in the gut, which keep yeast and other harmful bacteria in check.
*Read labels and avoid foods that have preservatives and the other ingredients talked about earlier, which interfere with the breaking down of food and absorption.
*Chew slowly and thoroughly. Digestion starts in the mouth.
*Eat several small meals a day to avoid overtaxing the digestive system. This also helps keep your blood sugar steady and reduce food cravings.
Post-partum depression is another common symptom moms experience that interferes with weight loss. Emotional food cravings are triggered by a feeling, not a biological need. When we over eat it means we are not listening to our body wisdom. We are covering up, drowning out, or burying an emotion that we don’t want to feel at the moment. Recognize the triggers.
You also need to address what stress does to your hormones. Pregnancy and early parenthood cause both physical and emotional stress. The Adrenal Glands are considered to be the stress glands of the body. When you have too much stress, more than 50 hormones that are secreted by these glands can go out of balance. If this hormone is out of balance you may have: weight gain, fatigue, insomnia, digestive problems, hormonal problems and high blood pressure. Additionally, you will be more likely to develop blood sugar problems as well as arthritis, asthma and allergies.
