Your Feet may be causing your back pain

Back Pain Recovery in Port Orchard, WA

What do your feet have to do with the back pain you’re experiencing? A lot actually. It’s called SPINE-FOOT CONNECTION. Altered foot biomechanics can lead to pelvic, spine, hip and knee problems. When your arch collapses, it causes the foot to roll in and is called over pronation.

This begins a chain reaction throughout your body. The spine is one link in the biomechanical Kinetic Chain, which extends from the feet through the ankle, tibia, knee, femur, hip, pelvis, and spine.

Your body does everything it can to keep your eyes level to the horizon. So when your arch collapses, your body compensates. Your ankle rolls inward. Your knee rolls inward. Your hips become unleveled and the spine curves unnaturally. One of your shoulders will drop. Then your neck tilts and turns, and your body tightens up. All of this leads to pain, discomfort and reduced performance.

The following are common causes of altered foot biomechanics:

  • Obvious foot problems such as bunions, corns, flat feet, and callouses.
  • Feet that “toe out” when walking.
  • Shoes that wear unevenly.
  • Knock knees or Bow legs.
  • Standing or walking on hard surfaces for more than 4 hours a day.
  • Regular participation in physical sports such as basketball, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, etc.
  • One leg being shorter than the other.
  • Injuries to your knees, back or neck.
  • Being over the age of 40.
  • Postural imbalances.
  • Back pain.

If any of these causes apply to you, properly fitted orthotic insoles can help. There are actually 3 arches in your foot: The medial longitudinal arch, which is the inside arch, The lateral longitudinal arch or the outer arch, and the transverse metatarsal arch which is across the ball of the foot. Over the counter insoles support only the inner arch, which may not be enough. Custom orthotics are more expensive, but are much more effective.

Chiropractors are trained to evaluate the spine and the extremities, and then to find solutions for these problems. Call our Port Orchard office with any questions or for an appointment today!
